Smashed n Stoned

Matua Raki has been contracted by ALAC to administer and run a number of Smashed ’n Stoned facilitator trainings.  This well known effective alcohol and drug group counselling programme for at risk 13-18 year olds is used by a number of people in the community including youth workers and school counsellors.  The facilitator training is a two day workshop.  Once facilitators have completed the training they are able to deliver the Smashed ’n Stoned programme to the young people they work with.

Screening and Brief Intervention Training with Child Youth and Family

Child Youth and Family are adopting the Substance and Choices Scale (SACS) as its primary AOD screening tool to ensure that the addiction treatment needs of young offenders are accurately identified. Staff will also be trained in the SACS Brief Intervention to further support young people. The aim is to ensure that only those who need further support are referred by services.

Matua Raki has been working with Child, Youth and Family to develop the training programme which will be rolled out to Youth Justice staff throughout September and October 2010.

The adoption of SACS, and training in its use as a brief intervention, are part of a range of initiatives being implemented by CYF under “Fresh Start”. These include an increased number of residential placements and funding for community programmes to be developed locally to meet identified needs.
