Contingency Management is a strategy and technique used in many fields to enhance the achievement of treatment goals. There is an extensive evidence base, mainly from the US, supporting the efficacy of these techniques in encouraging behaviour change in an addiction setting.  

The principles of Contingency Management are based on Behavioural Psychology and Operant Conditioning techniques. In action Contingency Management is the use of incentives, or reinforcement, to encourage and reward behaviour change. Incentives can be vouchers, privileges, or anything that has value to the person.
