Matua Raki has been contracted to deliver part of the Government’s Action Plan to tackle methamphetamine use. Prime Minister John Key announced the plan last year, saying New Zealand has a unique problem with methamphetamine. Prevalence rates are high by international standards, with just over 2% of the population having used methamphetamine in the last year. As part of the Action Plan, better routes will be provided into treatment, including more places in AOD treatment for problematic methamphetamine users.
The Ministry of Health is funding Matua Raki to scope and develop an implementation plan for the following workforce development initiatives:
- A guidance document for working with people with methamphetamine dependence, and national guidelines for detoxification services (including social detoxification).
- A mentoring framework as part of recruitment/retention strategies, to support new staff into the AOD treatment workforce.
- Development of methamphetamine treatment and polydrug misuse training and resources for staff.
- Peer support training.
- A recruitment and retention strategy for attracting people to a career in AOD.
- Development of a training package and resources for primary health care, along with innovative ways to work with primary health care providers.
- Approaches for working with families who are struggling to support people with methamphetamine dependency.
Matua Raki has developed and delivered training on the Alcohol and Drug Outcome Measure (ADOM) tool, which is used to gather information by services which are funded for additional residential beds for people with methamphetamine abuse problems.
Methamphetamine workforce scholarships are also being funded, and managed by Te Rau Matatini in partnership with Matua Raki.
